Message of Our Minister

The 18th Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of Mediterranean and its Protocols will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 3 to 6 December 2013.

In this period that Turkey is part of, we will welcome environment authorities of 21 countries as the Turkish Minister of Environment and Urbanization. And with this organization, our aim is to enable Turkey gain a more effective, stronger and more prestigious position at the international platform with the importance it attaches to natural life in line with its 2023 strategic vision.

We wish this meeting to be beneficial for all the participants and us, and thank in advance all my colleagues and all the participants that contributed to this organization.

Message of Ms. Maria Luisa Silva Mejias

With the kind support and hosting of the Government of Turkey, the 18th Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols will be held in December in Istanbul.

As Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona Convention), Mediterranean countries and the European Union remain determined to protect and develop in a sustainable manner the marine and coastal environment in the Mediterranean.

The main objective of the meeting is to review the progress achieved during the 2012–2013 biennium, approve the programme of work and budget for the 2014–2015 biennium and decide on future actions of significance to the marine and coastal environment and the promotion of sustainable development in the Mediterranean region.

Hope the meeting will be an opportunity for all participants to jointly advance in making necessary changes for the benefit of the marine and coastal environment in the Mediterranean
